GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66
We have a piece of nostalgia right here at home. Thousands of visitors travel Route 66 each year. People from every country...by car...by bicycle, motorcycle, even on stilts!!
Wilmington is home to several Route 66 attractions that are worth stopping for. As soon as you enter town from the North, the Gemini Giant greets you at the historic Launching Pad Drive-In. Make sure you stop in at the Launching Pad and grab a bite to eat. You don't want to miss the retro Coca-Cola interior complete with Route 66 wall murals and maps on the tables!
As you travel, you'll notice many beautiful homes from the 1920's that still stand along the beloved road.
Heading Southwest, you'll notice a nostalgic Sinclair Dino atop an auto body shop, watching over our Rt 66 travellers. Turn your head to the South there on Main Street, and you'll see the majestic Mar Theatre, and you'll instantly be brought back in time. Standing since 1937, she's shown original runs of classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life, and Gone With the Wind. Still in operation today, she's one of the oldest running movie theatres in the county.
Next stop on our town tour is Wilmington's Historic Downtown. Full of antique shops and unique retail establishments, you'll spend some time browsing all the great things our downtown has to offer. Grab some lunch at Hayden's Crossing, check out the gorgeous Celtic rugs at The Trinity Knot, or pick up a piece of vintage jewelry at Paraphernalia Antiques. Claire's corner is great place to sit on a park bench and watch the passers-by on their journeys.
Across from The Trinity Knot, there is walkway tucked in between the buildings leading to a pedestrian walkbridge. Cross the walkbridge over the Mill Race and you're just a few yards from Nelly's on Rt 66 eatery. Many a traveller from far & wide have stopped in Nelly's and left their mark. Literally. If you look up, you'll see that the ceiling is signed by visitors. Make sure you grab a marker, sign your name and where you're travelling from!
